New Zealand Māori Council

Statutory representative body under the Māori Community Development Act 1962.

NZMC Te Taiao Training Program:

Nau mai, haere mai ki Te Kaunihera wānanga o Te Taiao

The Natural and Built Environments Act 2023 has wide provisions for iwi, hapū and groups of hapū to be engaged in resource management and it strengthens the roles of Māori including for mātauranga Māori.

Aims and objectives of the programme

The NZMC training programme is to prepare and support participants for opportunities for Māori through the new resource management legislation, and to be informed of pathways for engagement with Regional Planning Committees. In particular members of Māori Committees will be supported to collaborate and to register their interests as statutory bodies under the Māori Community Development Act, 1962, as the legislative authority for the NZ Māori Council. This will provide a pathway for representation and engagement in the Regional Planning Committees and other bodies such as the Regional Spatial Strategy Committees.

The programme will give participants the opportunity to uphold and foster the special knowledge and connection that whānau, hapu and iwi have with their customary lands, waterways and resources.
